Twin Club - Valognes, France
We have now reached the 34th year of the exchange between our club and the Rotary Club of Valognes in north-western France and located southeast of Cherbourg.
It all began in 1986 when Reg Ling rang Geneva to try and find a newly formed French club, about our size, that would be interested in an exchange with ourselves. We were in luck. Cherbourg Val d’Isère was about to start a new club in Valognes and with even greater luck, Cherbourg was already twinned with Hythe. A few phone calls later Reg has arranged a personal visit to France and this was rapidly followed up by the then International Chairman, Chris Weston.
The first exchange was born in 1987 and has operated every year since to become a much anticipated annual event in our Rotary calendar, alternating between our visit to France and the Valognes Club visit to us. The format of the exchange weekend, which is a spouse/partner event, usually takes place on the first UK Bank Holiday weekend in May and is determined to some extent by the ferry timetables, It traditionally includes a 2 night stay hosted by club members with cultural visits, sightseeing activities and leisure time during the day, an informal bring & share style welcome dinner the first night and a more formal evening with speeches the next day.
The Valognes Exchange is not to be missed and is a guaranteed few days of friendship, fun and delicious food. There’s always a particularly good programme lined up for our visit and with the most amazing hospitality from our French hosts.
